Chapter 1
Johnny
6:01 a.m.
Damn! I’m getting lazy in old age.
Wiping the sleep from my eyes, I smash the snooze button and jump out of bed.
That’s the first time I’ve been beaten by the alarm clock. After spending fifteen years in the army—and now running a personal protection business for the best part of ten—I’ve always been a strict timekeeper.
Guess the writing’s on the wall. The job I’m about to take really will be my last.
After taking an ice-cold shower, I run a towel over my short crop of grey hair, fling on a t-shirt and jeans, and head downstairs to fix up a pot of industrial-strength coffee. I still have cobwebs in my head and need a good shot of the black stuff before I head downtown to meet my client.
At the turn of the year I promised myself this would be the last. Although I’m only in my late forties, looking after the rich and famous—and occasionally busting heads along the way—has lost its allure.
With enough savings behind me to enjoy a modest retirement, I have one foot firmly planted in the future; a future nestled up in some cosy little cabin hideaway.
Small town life has always been my idea of heaven; a place where I could blend into a community. A place where no one knows me. A place where I could open up that DIY store I’ve long been dreaming of.
Once I’ve blown away the dust of the morning, I leave the house and start up my motorcycle. Checking that I’ve the correct address for my meeting, I shove my phone into the pocket of my leather jacket, rev the engine twice, and tear down the road.
“You must be Mr. Dugan,” my client says as he pushes from a bar stool to greet me.
I shake his hand. “Please, call me Johnny.”
“And call me Ronald. What’s your poison?”
“Orange juice, please.”
“You don’t drink?”
“It’s a little early for me.”
A smirk pulls at his lips. “Fair point.”
After he’s ordered two glasses of OJ, he asks if we can talk about business out of view. I nod and follow him to the back of the bar.
As soon as I take a seat opposite him he slides a thin paper wallet across the table toward me. Without opening it, I pull it closer. “What’s this?”
“Your assignment.” He takes off his weathered baseball cap and leans back on his chair.
I didn't have much intel on this man before—just another politician, I thought—but as soon I see his shock of white hair I instantly recognize him. It’s Ronald Chambers; one of the most powerful diplomats in America, and a man more suited to a private cocktail bars than dingy taverns on the wrong side of town.
I squint. “Sorry, are you the Mr. Chambers?”
“That’s me.” He scans the bar for glances that won’t come before meeting my gaze again. “I don’t make a big deal about it in public, though. Hence the baseball cap.”
“Don’t worry, sir, your secret’s safe with me.” I take a sip of my OJ. “So, what can I do for you?”
“I have an important summit coming up in LA. It’s the last one before I retire and I need some personal protection.”
“Don’t take this as me talking my way out of the job, but wouldn't you feel more comfortable with a larger security team? I could call the agency and put something together.”
“I don’t trust the usual faces. Not since…” he hesitates.
“Mr. Chambers?”
“It’s my niece.” He nods to the paper folder I’ve yet to open. “She’s the one I want you to watch while I’m away.”
“Your niece?”
“She had a bad experience with an ex-boyfriend. Nasty piece of work who stalked her. He’s doing a little jail time, but he’s due for release while I’m away.”
“Why don’t you hire government protection? I’m sure that covers families of high profile politicians.”
“It does but my niece doesn't take too kindly to large entourages of bodyguards. She’s fiercely independent.”
I smirk. “Strong-headed girl, huh?”
“You don’t know the half of it. She’s a fiery young thing. Takes after her mother.”
“Why did you come to me?”
“I heard you were one of the best. You got a Medal of Honor for serving in the military, right?”
My gaze falls. “That was a long time ago.”
“I get it. Most heroes are modest. Look, once I’ve returned from the summit I’ll figure out a more permanent security arrangement for my niece. Until then I’ll need absolute discretion.”
“You can count on it.”
“Good to hear. Also, you’ll be taking residence in our house while I’m gone.” He nods to the folder. “All the details are there.”
“You want me to babysit her?“
“In a round about way, yes. She doesn't know her ex is due for release and he’s bad news. I’m all the family she has. I couldn't bear to think of her in danger.”
I slide up the wallet. “Don’t worry, sir, she’ll be safe in my watch. Seems like a pretty straightforward job.”
He laughs. “You haven't met her yet.”
As he takes a drink, I open the wallet and see a picture of the subject clipped to a map and address of the house. The second my eyes fix on the photo of the girl I feel a pull at my gut. The young woman in question is gorgeous; with bright-blue eyes, long auburn hair, and a smile so beautiful I can’t help but feel a twinge in my pants. But a pretty picture isn't what has my heart racing…
I know this girl.
I know her a little too well.
“Something wrong, Johnny?”
“No.” I sharply close the wallet. “Nothing.”
“Good. For a second there I thought you’d seen a ghost.”
I bite back a nervous smile. Little does he know I have seen a ghost. And if he knew what happened between us then he wouldn't be offering me this gig.
After exchanging small talk, I except the assignment like a professional, drink up, and leave the bar.
I have a week to go until I engage the subject and do what I do best, which is to protect.
But it won’t be easy.
I’ve fought on the field, shielded politicians and movie stars from stalkers and bullets, but watching this girl may prove to be the hardest challenge of them all. Especially after leaving a piece of my heart with her almost a year ago to the day…
Chapter 2
Georgina
A week later…
I scowl at my overprotective uncle. “I’m twenty-three.”
“Yes, but you're vulnerable on your own.”
“I’m a grown woman! The last thing I need is a babysitter.”
“A bodyguard,” he corrects.
“Same thing.”
“Look, I know you don’t like it, and neither do I, but it’s for the best. It’ll be hard to reach me while I’m away. I’d sleep mu
ch easier knowing you had protection.”
“You mean you’d sleep easier knowing I was being tracked!”
Uncle Ronald rounds the kitchen counter to close the gap between us, and runs a hand along my cheek. “I’d never forgive myself if something happened to you. You’re my only family, Georgina.”
I pull back. “Then stop trying to stifle me. I’ll be fine, really.”
“I don’t know…things got pretty ugly the last time I left you alone.”
“That was almost eight months ago. Anyway, Travis is behind bars.”
Just as he goes to respond he stops short.
I squint. “What?”
“Nothing. I’m sorry, angel, but it’s not up for debate.” Fetching up his briefcase from the side of the kitchen island, he straightens up. “You could always change your mind and come away with me.”
“Surrounded by a load of stuffy old suits in some dull hotel? Uh, no thanks.”
“Then accept the fact you’ll have someone around to watch you. You can still live your life, just try not to give this one the slip.”
I frown.
“Promise me, Georgie.”
I blow out. “Fine. If it’ll make you happy. But when you get back you have to start letting me live a little.”
“I will.”
“Remember, I’m a dancer. I might not be sticking around forever.”
He smiles. “To be honest it would be safer if you didn't.”
A car horn breaks the moment.
“Right,” he says, blowing out. “Must dash.”
I sigh and give him a slight smile. “Have a safe flight, Uncle.”
“Thank you, dear.” After planting a goodbye kiss on my cheek, he leaves the house to catch his chauffeur-driven ride to the airport.
Waiting until I know his car would have driven a good mile or so out of town, I race upstairs to get changed for tonight. I promised him I’d at least reign in my busy social life while he was gone, but what he doesn't know won’t hurt him.
Once I’m ready for the night, I spill out onto the street, hail a cab, and ask the driver to take me to my favorite cocktail bar.
It’s my first taste of freedom with my very best friends. First we’ll drink and then we’ll dance.
I need this so much.
I know I’m privileged to be part of a wealthy family, and I hate being so bratty about it, but sometimes it hurts having your wings clipped. I’m a free spirit, and more than old enough to take risks of my own.
Johnny
I might be getting a little rusty around the edges but I’m the best at what I do. Arriving at Mr. Chamber’s plush three storey mansion to find his niece made quick work of leaving before we could meet, I enter a trendy cocktail bar downtown. I scan the place and quickly spot her.
My god. She looks more beautiful than I remember. Wearing a snug black dress that accentuates her stunning curves and sexy legs, Georgina is as cock-achingly gorgeous as ever.
Just before she catches me spying on her, I retreat behind a post. She’s standing at the far end of the bar with a small group of friends; two girls and a guy, all around the same age as her.
The situation is awkward so I decide to wait for a while before breaking up her little party. As long as she’s in my line of sight then she can come to no harm.
“Hey sexy…”
Alerted by a woman’s voice, I turn on my heel and see a blonde girl in a crop-top and short skirt gaze up at me. Smiling, she hangs off my arm and pushes closer to me.
“Hey,” I reply.
“Wanna buy me a drink?” Her eyes round as she runs a hand along my bulging forearm. “Ooh, such big muscles!”
“If you want a drink the bar is just behind us.”
Her bright-green eyes narrow. “Sorry?”
I pull my arm away. “I’m waiting for someone. Sorry.”
Scanning me up and down, the smile on her face fades. “Just my luck, hitting on a gay guy.”
I snicker as she storms off with her ego bruised.
When my attention returns to Georgie my heart crashes inside my chest…
She’s gone!
Panic hits me like a bucket of ice-cold water. I’ve never lost sight of a subject before, even in the biggest crowd and in the most stressful of situations.
Fuck! Not only am I getting slow with age, I’m getting sloppy!
I rush outside and search the streets for a few frantic minutes before relief lifts my heart. Standing in a long cue outside a nightclub, I spot her again. She’s laughing and fooling about with her buddies, still blissfully unaware I’m on her tail.
Breathing a sigh of relief, I decide to make my presence known and walk right up to the group as they wait in line.
“Georgina?”
One of her friends spots me first and gasps as I approach. “Oh my god!”
Georgie soon follows her friend’s wide-eyed gaze. As soon as her beautiful baby-blues land on me her jaw falls open.
“Hey there,” I start.
She squints. “Johnny?”
I smile.
One of Georgie’s friends nudges her. “Who’s the hottie?”
Georgie’s cheeks flush. “An old friend.”
Her buddy snorts. “An old friend? Girl, you’ve been keeping secrets. Got a thing for an older guy, huh?”
I wince at that.
“Not that it’s bad,” she adds, shooting me an apologetic smile. “You look like you keep yourself fit.”
I shrug. “I lift a little.”
Georgie makes an excuse to her friends and drags me off to one side. “What are you doing here?”
“Crazy coincidence,” I lie.
“Coincidence? Didn't you move to California?”
“No.”
“Why? You were all set.”
“Sometimes plans change.”
Her eyes darken. “It’s been a year. I thought I’d never see you again.”
“Life got in the way.”
She frowns. “You mean marriage.”
“I’m not married.”
“Well, that’s the excuse you used when we kissed. I can’t have sex, you said. I’m married.”
“I lied.”
Her eyes narrow. “Why?”
“I’m much too old for you.”
She throws her arms up. “What is it with people treating me like some dumb kid, trying to tell me what’s best for me? I’m a fully-grown woman.”
Don’t I fucking know it! I have to force my eyes to stay on hers and not her curvy chest. She looks so tempting in her figure-hugging dress!
She hooks her hands to her hips. “Well, I guess it was nice seeing you again. Bye.” With that said, she re-joins her buddies in the cue.
Just before they enter the club, though, I call out to her. “Georgie, hold up.”
She stops in her tracks and stares at me.
“I’ve come to take you home,” I tell her.
Her friends giggle.
She looks shocked. “What?”
“I’ve come to take you home…” I glance up at the neon sign above the nightclub door before finding her eyes again. “Not really my style.”
The tiniest hint of a smile pulls at her cherry-red lips.
When she tells her friends she’ll meet with them another time they’re only too happy to see her walk away, urging her on with each step she takes and wolf-whistling.
Catching a cab with her, I brace myself for what’s to come. As soon as she finds out the real reason I’m here she’ll freak out.
If only I did return to whisk her off and make sweet love to her then I’d be a happy man. But, as it stands, I’m here to do a job. Being a professional, I can’t nail my client’s niece—especially the niece of a very important client.
Nope. I blew my chance a year ago.
I have to stay strong and keep my dick where it belongs—in my pants.
Chapter 3
Georgina
My palms sweat and my clit tingles with lustful ant
icipation. Sitting dangerously close to me on the backseat of the cab, Johnny looks even more muscular and handsome than I remember. The way his wide, flared chest and broad shoulders stretch his crisp white tee should be criminal. He’s a pleasurable assault on the eyes and the senses.
When we kissed a year ago I really believed I’d struck gold. He was much older than my usual type, with short grey hair and stubble, but he made me feel so safe and wanted in his big strong arms.
Before he came along I’d always been painfully shy about my body image; carrying major hang-ups about my ‘fuller’ figure since my college days. But he shattered all that a year ago, kissing me with a need that made my heart race and my belly flutter.
The way we met was like a scene out of some cheesy made-for-TV romance. Me and one of my girlfriends took a vacation to a snowy small town, north of the city. On the first day we arrived we visited a quaint little book shop. It was there that I bumped into Johnny—literally! He was browsing for boring DIY books when I crashed into him. I was turning a corner in the store when: BOOM! Smack bang into him!
From the very first second my gaze met his chocolate-brown eyes I knew I was in for a world of trouble. It was instant attraction. I’d never felt such a strong desire for anyone in my life. My arms and legs tingled, and my pussy ached with a sweet need that almost had me doubling over on the first glance. The man was sex personified; towering over me and possessing a look that was both rugged and smart at the same time.
That very night he invited me over to the cabin he rented for the weekend. It was the best date I ever had. We played vintage records, drank wine, talked about the universe under a canopy of stars, and then, after flirting like crazy, we kissed.
As soon as his soft, masterful lips found mine I was in heaven. It was the most delicious and erotic kiss I had ever experienced. I really thought he was going to take my virginity. Just as he started to unbutton my shirt—hovering over my willing body beside a cosy fireplace in his cabin—he cruelly stopped and pulled back.
